A Critical Examination of David Epstein’s “Phase Synchrony” Theory of Rubato

چکیده

Epstein’s “phase synchrony” theory of rubato, presented in Chapter 11 of his recent book, Shaping Time (1995), postulates two independent timing systems: a rigid “ground beat” and a flexible pulse that characterizes rubato. According to the theory, rubato is controlled by resolving the dissynchrony between the two timing systems at strategic points, namely phrase boundaries, at which phase synchrony is (re-) established. Epstein reports empirical data suggesting that outstanding pianists’ performances exhibit phase synchrony to a large degree. The present article presents a critique of Epstein’s theory and methodology, as well as an attempt to replicate his measurements of two performances. The theory is shown to rest on untenable or highly implausible assumptions, the methodology is found to be flawed, and the “phase fits” are revealed to conform to chance expectations, besides being difficult to replicate due to measurement error. A Critical Examination of Ibn-Sina’s Theory of the Conditional Syllogism

This paper will examine Ibn Sina’s theory of the Conditional Syllogism from a purely logical point of view, and will lay bare the principles he adopted for founding his theory, and the reason why the newly introduced part of his logic remained undeveloped and eventually was removed from the texts of logic in the later Islamic tradition. As a preliminary discussion, this paper briefly examines I...

Marginally subcritical dynamics explain enhanced stimulus discriminability under attention

Recent experimental and theoretical work has established the hypothesis that cortical neurons operate close to a critical state which describes a phase transition from chaotic to ordered dynamics. Critical dynamics are suggested to optimize several aspects of neuronal information processing. However, although critical dynamics have been demonstrated in recordings of spontaneously active cortica...

A Novel Transformer-Based Single-to-Three Phase Conversion Technique Using Rotating Magnetic Field Theory

This paper presents a new single to three phase converter using rotating magnetic field transformer. Conventional transformers have been used in many converters aiming at supplementary improvements and they usually have no critical effect on the conversion technique. In this paper, the conversion technique is based on a special rotating magnetic field transformer in which there are two windings...

A critical study of David Ross’s view on ethical mutual competitions with an emphasis on religious texts

This paper has studied David Ross`s solutions for ethical mutual competitions. For Ross, the mutual competition happens in ethical duty of the present, and one should give priority to those duties with more emphasized obligation. He has considered special relationship as the foundation for ethical duties upon which the norm for priority and the degree of obligation are based. As is understood b...

Spherical Designs and Zeta Functions of Lattices

We set up a connection between the theory of spherical designs and the question of minima of Epstein’s zeta function. More precisely, we prove that a Euclidean lattice, all layers of which hold a 4-design, achieves a local minimum of the Epstein’s zeta function, at least at any real s > n 2 . We deduce from this a new proof of Sarnak and Strömbergsson’s theorem asserting that the root lattices ...
